Ebbsfleet United v Macclesfield Town ; Match Preview

THE OPPOSITION

Macclesfield Town FC
Nickname – The Silkmen
Founded – 1874
Ground – Moss Rose, 6355 capacity
Manager – Steve King
Captain – Nat Brown
Top scorer – Matthew Barnes-Homer (15)

Macclesfield have enjoyed a relatively good season so far, sitting in a comfortable position in the table and went on a very good FA Cup run. Results wise, Macclesfield have secured some great victories this season against Dartford, Wrexham and Kidderminster. Their worst result looks to be the 4-1 loss at Luton near the beginning of the season.

Stonebridge Road will play host to the Premier Sports cameras this Friday as it was chosen to be on TV, bringing the game forward a day. Ebbsfleet will be hoping home advantage comes good this month as this match begins a run of four home games in a row. The ‘Fleet are looking to end a long winless run that dates back to 17 November – a 2-1 victory away at none other than Macclesfield Town.

Not only was this their last win but the ‘Fleet are the only team to come from behind to register a win against Macclesfield so far this season. Silkmen are looking for the three points to keep their outside chance of play-offs alive. Currently eight points away from that last play-off spot, a loss could be pretty damaging to their chances.

The ‘Fleet will be hoping it’s fourth time lucky this time round as the last three matches have fallen victim to the weather. Tamworth at home, and Cambridge and Hyde away, were postponed meaning the ‘Fleet’s last outing was that late loss away at Woking.

Macclesfield’s last league match was back on 19th January when they entertained Kidderminster and ran out eventual winners against red-hot Harriers with a goal from Waide Fairhurst in the 56th minute. The Silkmen looked to keep the non-league flag flying high in the FA Cup (along with Luton) as they hosted Premier League strugglers Wigan – unfortunately a 7th minute penalty from Jordi Gomez was enough to see off the lower league opponents.

The Silkmen can be extremely proud of their efforts in this season’s Cup and one player they can thank for this run is former ‘Fleet favourite Lance Cronin. The shot stopper made a couple of decent saves in the previous round to stop Championship side Cardiff from progressing. Unfortunately for them, Lance will be unavailable for this match against his old club due to suffering a broken thumb in the lead-up to the Wigan game.

The ‘Fleet currently sit bottom of the table and 7 points from safety so a win here is absolutely vital. A loss could see the ‘Fleet slip further away from safety. The Silkmen currently sit in 10th position and a win will see them move up to 7th in the table, at least until Saturday afternoon.
KEY PLAYERS
The ‘Fleet will be hoping striker Nathan Elder is on top of his game. The striker hit the winner from the spot up at Moss Rose in the ‘Fleet’s last victory and they’ll certainly be hoping he can get on the scoresheet this time to fire the Reds to victory. Centre backs Jack Saville and Paul Lorraine will have to be wary on Friday as they come up against one of the League’s top strikers in Matthew Barnes-Homer, they’ll need to be on top form to keep him out.

Macclesfield, of course, look to hotshot Barnes-Homer to fire them to victory in this match. Fifteen goals in the League already the striker will see this as a perfect chance to add to his tally! John Paul Kissock is another player who could cause the ‘Fleet defence problems, the skilful midfielder certainly has a great range of passing in his repetoire and his pace and trickery could come in handy against the ‘Fleet backline.
TEAM NEWS
Long-term absentees Ram Marwa and Moses Ashikodi still look to be missing from the squad whilst Ashley Carew looks to finally begin his three-game suspension. On-loan defender Jack Saville has extended his loan deal until the end of the season. Manager Liam Daish had a busy transfer deadline day snapping up Stefan Payne for the remainder of the season after his release from Sutton. Also, the 'Fleet have taken striker Josh Scott on loan for a month from Dagenham and Redbridge and have taken midfielder Adedamola Shitta and striker Tobi Alabi on youth loans from Millwall. All are available for Friday's squad.

As already mentioned Lance Cronin faces a short spell on the sidelines after breaking his thumb so the Silkmen have drafted in former Chelsea 'keeper Rhys Taylor, who was released by Preston this week. Dean McDonald recently signed and came off the bench in the game v Wigan, and Pablo Mills serves the 2nd of his three match suspension. Striker Amari Morgan-Smith has recently gone out on loan to Kidderminster Harriers. Fringe players Junior Yiadom and Arthur Gnahoua have gone to Chelmsford and Colwyn Bay on initial one month loans while manager Steve King has added to his squad on deadline day. Darren Murphy, formerly of Stevenage, has been drafted in after being released by Port Vale. Whilst at Stevenage he helped them lift the Conference Premier Trophy and the FA Trophy. King was quick to get some loan signings in too, grabbing Micah Evans and Johnny Gorman on loan from Blackburn and Wolves respectively. Gorman has 9 Northern Ireland caps to his name so he'll bring something to the table for Macc.

PREVIOUS LEAGUE MEETINGS:

17.11.12. Macclesfield Town 1-2 Ebbsfleet United.

LAST TIME OUT:

Macclesfield Town 1-2 Ebbsfleet United.

The ‘Fleet made it two wins on the trot following on from that superb comeback win against Hyde with yet another comeback win, this time away at Macclesfield. Chris Holroyd put the hosts ahead just before half-time but a resiliant second half performance saw the ‘Fleet get back into the game, with Phil Walsh knocking an Ashley Carew corner in 12 minutes into the second half. The ‘Fleet then got their reward late on in the game as Elder was fouled in the area, the striker dusted himself off to put the ball past Cronin from the spot.
Attendance: 1,896.

HOW THE BOOKIES SEE IT:

William Hill have the ‘Fleet to win at 17/10 but slight favourites Macclesfield are at 6/5. If you fancy a draw then the odds for this are 5/2. If you fancy Matthew Barnes-Homer to bag a hattrick you can get odds of 20/1.
Bet Victor have the ‘Fleet at 19/10 with Macclesfield coming in at 13/10. A draw for this game sees odds of 13/5. If you fancy the ‘Fleet to win 1-0 with Nathan Elder grabbing the goal then the odds for that are 50/1.
Ladbrokes have the ‘Fleet at 19/10 with Macclesfield favourites at 5/4 and a draw at 12/5. If you think the ‘Fleet fan register a 2-1 win like up at Moss Rose then the odds for that are 10/1.

Fleet Fan File with Ryan Sadler

This weeks edition of Fan File I caught up with young 'Fleet fan Ryan Sadler, he tells us about his time following the 'Fleet so far!

Name: Ryan Sadler (pictured to the side next to the legend that is Kenny Brooker).
Age: 16
From: Northfleet
Time supporting the 'Fleet: 7 Years

Do you remember your first EUFC game? Who was it against, and what was the score?

Gravesend and Northfleet vs Canvey Island 2002 - I think we lost 1-0 but to me as a 6 year old the score didn't really mean anything. My dad was left to look after me so dragged me along to the game. I remember having to queue on Stonebridge Road hill surrounded by hundreds of 'Fleet fans. The crowd was reportedly around 6000, which to a small child like me seemed millions. The atmosphere was electric but unfortunately I didn't attend again until 5 years later! Despite nagging my dad most weeks.

You're a regular 'Fleet fan. What was the 'hook' for you?

At first it was just something to do on a Saturday, got me out the house. The real hook was probably the fans, I made a few friends and this gave me a reason to keep going back. The football then started to play a part in my reasoning. I was part of 'The Fleet Lounge' for 2 seasons as well which helped to keep me hooked. ?

Who is your favourite 'Fleet player that you've seen play, and why?

Paul McCarthy - He was such a solid defender who played with passion, the club captain that lead by example. Read the game excellently, always knew what was going to happen and stopped it. Also towards the end of his regular playing days, he was getting older and had some injury problems but still put 110% into everything, now has the thoroughly deserves assistant managers role, a true club legend.

What are your top three 'Fleet games?

Forest Green Rovers 1-4 Ebbsfleet 2008 -
It was my first away game following the Fleet, we won 4-1. I didn't know what to expect on the morning of the trip but it was on I'll never forget, a great game and a brilliant day out. The highlight for me was Kwesi Appiah coming on as a sub and scoring with his first touch (a header from a corner).

Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Ebbsfleet 2008 -
The 1st round of the FA Cup away to a league 1 team, something which everyone was excited for. With a few hundred other Fleet fans making the trip the atmosphere was brilliant, the game itself was very close and in my opinion we deserved nothing less than a replay. A highlight was Clayton Donaldson losing his rag and pulling a 'mooney' to the travelling fans. It was the first time I'd used the Fleet Trust travel, on a coach full of excited fans!

Chelmsford 1-4 Ebbsfleet 2011 -
The first leg of our play-off semi final, everyone was nervous about this match especially knowing we was without Preston Edwards but what a game it turned out to be. The team showed exactly why they deserved to be in the final and gave every travelling fan their moneys worth sending us all into the second leg with a lot of confidence. We dominated the game and got a much better result than most expected. The best part however for me was the atmosphere, non-stop singing throughout the match followed by celebrations in the carpark for a good half an hour after the game. Amazing night out, starting our return to the premier division.

And your worst three?

Redbridge 2-0 Ebbsfleet -
It was a game in which many expected us to win, the magic of the FA Cup struck in Redbridge's favour. It was a dreadful performance and resulted in us being knocked out the competition. A very 'dull' day out.

Oxford 5-1 Ebbsfleet -
The worst results for me often a high scoreline and being completely outplayed. This match included both of them factors. I remember being freezing cold and just waiting for the final whistle, when your looking forward to the end, you know its been a bad day at the office!

Barrow 2-0 Ebbsfleet -
After the very long journey to the game it was always going to be a long day, but when Gavin Heeroo was sent off it seemed it may be a lot longer than I expected, despite lasting 75 minutes level we ended up losing 2-0, the journey home seemed a lot longer than the journey there.

Your favourite 'Fleet goal. Where, when and why?

My favourite goal would have to be Ricky Shakes' neat lob in the play-off final at Farnborough, the finish itself was expertly taken but the play leading to it was what made it so special. The ball that Westy played through was out of this world, the goal obviously meant a lot as well which makes it my favourite to have witnessed. A close second would be Liam Enver-Marum at Kidderminster.

What is the best ground you've been to supporting the 'Fleet?

Darlington's Echo Arena - out of this world.

And the worst?

Hampton and Richmond's Beveree Stadium - No character!

Outside of the 'Fleet, what is the best match you've attended?

My first ever football game - Charlton Athletic 3-1 Aston Villa.

Name your Fleet XI from players you've seen play:

GK - Preston Edwards
RB - Mark Ricketts
CB - Paul Lorraine
CB - Paul McCarthy
LB - Derek Duncan
RM - Michael West
CM - Ashley Carew
CM - Michael Bostwick
LM - Peter Holmes
CF - Luke Moore
CF - Magno Vieira

Under the spotlight with...Gareth Gwillim.

After recently conducting a short interview with the 'Fleet goalkeeper Preston Edwards, I managed to catch up with new signing Gareth Gwillim. The full back signed this week after recently being released by Sutton United. A big thank you to Gareth for contributing to the Blog. Before I continue, here's a little bit about the defender.

Name - Gareth Gwillim
Date of Birth - 09.01.83
Place of Birth - Farnborough
Former Clubs - Crystal Palace, Farnborough Town, Bishop's Stortford, Histon, Dagenham and Redbridge, AFC Wimbledon, Sutton United.

You've been playing at Sutton United in the Conference South, how did you find that after a decent amount of games in League Two with AFC Wimbledon?

I had played in the Conference South with Bishops Stortford so knew many of the teams and surroundings, the pace and quality was not a million miles off league 2. As you can tell by the league table, every team was capable of beating any team on their day and the gap between top and bottom is remarkable. I expect it to go down to the wire in terms of relegations, play off positions and title winners.

You spent some time at Dagenham and Redbridge, only playing a handful of games for the club. What happened during your time there?
I would have joined Dagenham and Redbridge in December before when they were in league 1 but a bid was turned down by Histon as it was going to be paid in installments, rather than in full. I then joined once they had been promoted into league 1 and Histon agreed to let me join for free as they were going through financial difficulties. As normally happens with a promoted team, the management goes with the team that got him there and I couldnt break into the team for a prolonged period of time. I was always in the squad but only when the team wanted to see the game out I was put on, unfortunately that was few and far between and attacking substitutions were often made before defensive ones.

You won promotion to League Two with the Wombles - a true 'fans club' - what was it like playing for them, and how do you feel about the fans there?

I joined AFC Wimbledon at a great time, they were top of the league and the place was buzzing, the fans really took to me as I did to them, I joined on a crest of a wave and enjoyed getting them into the league and also keeping them in the league, whilst scoring my very first professional goal at the age of 28. Always something that I'll treasure.

What was your earliest footballing memory?
Playing for Orpington Rovers at the age of 8, the majority of the team were school friends and I still stay in contact with a few from that team.

Who would you say are the best wingers you've come up against?
One player in League 2 that did impress me was Graaban at Rotherham. At their ground, I can honestly say I came out on top and didnt know what the fuss was about, in the return fixture at home, the first 10 minutes he was electric, I truely didnt expect it but once I got to grips with him he phased out the game.

You worked under one of the most repescted lower league managers in Terry Brown, what sort of manager he is, and what makes him so well respected?
Terry is lovely fella who I can only thank for taking me on loan and then permanantly at AFC wimbledon as it was a remarkable time at the club. He did not renew my contract the following summer as he wanted to go for a player who was on double the amount I was and just got promotion, who he didn't end up getting. Although I didnt like the decision, it was an honest one.

Who do you deem to be the biggest influence in your life?
My Mum and Dad.

Most part-time players hold down a job outside of football to make ends meet. You, however, managed to hold down a job whilst playing full-time football. What was your job, and how did you find this situation?
I had worked nights for various companies on London Underground installing and commissioning PA and CCTV systems from the age of 20, I had opportunities at 22 and 23 to go full time with football but it wasnt financially viable. At the age of 27 I had a few seasons at the Blue Square Premier under my belt and thought that I could do both which Dagenham gave me the chance to do. Some players and clubs couldnt believe it could be done, I liked to prove them wrong. A lot more people do more than I do, I appreciate that footballs part of my life.

Who are your friends in football?
Matt Langston from Histon, Robbie Elliot currently Newcastle's number 2 and Rob Gillman who I was at Bishop's Stortford with.

What attracted you to Ebbsfleet United, and what are you most looking forward to in your time here?
Liam Daish is highly regarded at this level and you can tell he is a proper footballers manager, nothing but praise about him from people I had spoken to plus the opportunity to play in the Conference again. I have played at Ebbsfleet quite a few times in the past and has always been a good place to play. Looking forward to climbing up the table.

What is the best game you've played in?
Has to be the play off final between AFC Wimbledon and Luton Town at the Etihad. I played with a fractured hip under pain killers and lasted a hour, obviously the result went our way and the celebrations were electric

Do you have any regrets in your Footballing career?
Only ever missed one penalty in my career, away to Truro. at the time, we were 1-0 down, I smashed it against the post and it flew past me, all I kept thinking was 'you idiot', luckily we won 2-1 and was a better coach journey home than I expected.

What has been the greatest advice you've received in your career, and who did you receive it from?
John Beck gave me the knowledge of nutrition and fitness conditioning that I take with me everywhere, it has helped me go from conf south to league 1 in 2 years.

Finally, sum up your career in one word only.
Privileged

My Football Club - A failed project

My Football Club - A failed project

These views are my own and are not intended to cause offence to anyone, it is just something for everyone to think and talk about.

February 2008. The month My Football Club, a worldwide society, bought 75% shares in my Club - Ebbsfleet United. Some say the Club would have ceased to exist if they hadn't of come in and 'saved us', well now with them we could cease to exist.

With 30,000 members paying £35 a year, the Club were in good shape for a while but for those fans who paid their good money week in week out, it became clear that this was a bad move. My Football Club was attracting interest from all over the World but would these 30,000 'fans' really stick around? Of course they wouldn't. It's an adventure to these people, it started off as a real life "Football Manager". Members were told they could vote on the team, tactics, etc. Of course you'd love to pick your own team at the Club you support, but these weren't supporters of Ebbsfleet United Football Club. In fact, the majority of them probably hadn't even heard of the club before! They were messing with our Football Club.

May 2008. Lifelong 'Fleet fans were rewarded for their support with a trip to Wembley to see their team. The FA Trophy final against Torquay United. Despite a not so great game, the 'Fleet managed to win. Little old Ebbsfleet pulling off a victory at Wembley? It was one of the greatest days in Ebbsfleet's History. 26,000+ Ebbsfleet 'fans' turned up. Where are they now?

My Football Club take the plaudits for our win at Wembley. Of course it's nothing to do with Liam Daish assembling a fine team together is it? The internet fans take the credit for it all. It's wrong for them to take the credit, on so many levels.

April 2010. Despite a resiliant performance from the lads and a 3-4 win away at Tamworth, the 'Fleet were relegated to the Blue Square Bet South. A gutting day for the fans who had travelled up and the fans who have supported the club through everything.

Have My Football Club taken the blame for our relegation? Of course they haven't. It's all about ego's with them. Anything good that happens they're happy to take credit for, yet when something goes wrong - it's always somebody elses fault.

Despite this relegation and yet another low budget, Liam Daish produced miracles. He assembled a squad together and marched us back to the Premier at first attempt. I suppose My Football Club want to take the credit for that too?

This week some disturbing news was released by the Club. Due to lack of home games, crowds being low, and probably a whole host of other reasons, the Club needs the fans to dip into their pockets once again to save us. I've lost count how many times the fans are asked to give money because it's needed. It's evident, from this, that My Football Club cannot fund the Club on their ridiculously low numbers of just over 1,000. In fact, they've not been funding the Club for a while now but it's getting worse - a lot worse. An owner should be able to fund what they own. If you cannot fund something then why continue dragging it down? My Football Club are producing a ridiculous amount of money a few times a year. Recently over £3,000 was raised for the club. Straight to the point, it is not enough. My Football Club, as owners, should be producing money for the Club on a regular basis. It is becoming very tiring seeing how financially unstable the Club is, and as a Club, we are losing all credibility. We're a joke. We were a respected Club within the Non-League pyramid and we're now becoming a laughing stock. The Fleet Trust have made everyone aware of their concerns and although they cannot fund the Club themselves, due to lack of members, they have given My Football Club a gentle nudge in the OUT direction. Where does this leave Ebbsfleet United as a Club? Well quite frankly, sinking deeper and deeper. What I'd like is for any My Football Club members reading this to answer the following questions. Let all of the 'Fleet fans on the Forum know what your plan is as from where we are, it looks like you have no plan! Of course if you don't wish to speak to everyone, then my email account is always open to messages.

1 - What is the cut-off point in terms of My Football Club members controlling the club? I seem to remember the members taking a vote to reduce this number. Are they under this number yet?

2 - Is an owner/investor being actively looked for by the Ownership model?

3 - Are My Football Club going to keep a death grip on the Club until the bitter end just to keep ego's and pride intact?

4 - If My Football Club still believe they can run the Club efficiently at this level. how do they see them funding and securing the Club for the next five seasons?

5 - Would a membership price of somewhere in the region of £200 a year for every member (a figure that would no doubt enable My Football Club to efficiently run the club) be a course of action the model is willing to adopt?

6 - How can an 'Owner' loan money to themselves?

My Football Club can in no way fund the Club like a normal Chairman and Board, it's time to move aside. You are playing with a real Football Club here, our future is at stake and you're showing no signs of improving it. It's evidently clear that you cannot afford to run the club effectively in the Blue Square Bet Premier and South. Gate money and income streams should not be used to fund the Club - these should be used as a little extra 'pocket money' if you like. You should be funding the Club. As previously mentioned, it is the Owner's job to fund the Club. Pull your fingers out, stop letting your ego's grow and get out of our Club. You are slowly killing this fine Club, everyone can see it but you! It's been mentioned that the My Football Club society wants what is best for Ebbsfleet United. If that is the case then do the right thing! Step aside. You need Ebbsfleet United more than Ebbsfleet United needs you. You can help the Club by turning up to matches and donating when you feel like it, but please, do what's right. Do not let your pride get in the way of what is right, and what is wrong!

That is all for now, just something for you all to think about. Whatever happens I, and many others, will remain fans of this Club. Members of My Football Club may not.

The 'Fleet are ready to roar!

This Saturday the 'Fleet travel North to face the Tigers of Hyde in this Blue Square Bet Premier match. Can they grab three valuable points in their fight for survival?

Hardly related to Hyde or Ebbsfleet, but Phil Jevons has his own song made about him!

THE OPPOSITION

Hyde FC – formerly Hyde United.
Nickname - The Tigers
Founded – 1919
Ground – Ewan Fields, 4073 capacity.
Chairman – Tamir Khan
Manager – Scott McNiven
Captain – Adam Griffin
Top scorer – Phil Jevons (14)

Despite only just being promoted to this division, Hyde have formed a decent squad this season with many of their players having vital Football League experience. Players such as Matty Blinkhorn, Phil Jevons, Chris Sedgwick, Raymond Puterill, Kelvin Lomax and Adam Griffin have all spent a good amount of time playing in the Football League and impressive striker Scott Spencer could cause problems.
THE SEASON SO FAR
The Tigers didn’t have the greatest of starts to the season – it took them until 9 September to get their first win, a 5-2 victory at home to Hereford United. Sitting in the bottom four then, the Tigers have had a mixed bag of results since – but have done enough to climb the table and not look back, picking up some impressive results including a 7-0 victory at home to Woking and victories against title-chasing Newport County and Grimsby Town.

The Tigers come into this game on the back of a 2-0 loss away at Grimsby. The home side had plenty of shots but failed to test the Hyde goalkeeper enough throughout the game. The all-important breakthrough finally came in the 84th minute as striker Andy Cook converted Jamie Devitt’s cross before sealing the points in the 90th minute with a strike from the edge of the box.
The Fleet are yet to play since their 1-0 loss at Woking on 13 January as the last two games have been postponed due to bad weather. Due to play Tamworth at home, and Cambridge away, those games were both postponed due to a frozen pitch. Dates for the rescheduled games have not been set yet.

Hyde’s 2-0 loss at Grimsby leaves them sitting 15th in the table and three points clear of safety, six places below them – which highlights just how close this division is.

Due to Barrow pulling off a shock 2-0 win away at Newport County the ‘Fleet now sit bottom of the table and seven points from safety. Good results are few and far between this season but the lads will be hoping to start a run of results with a good result here!

There are no guarantees this match will go ahead given the continuing wintry weather but the Hyde groundstaff will be doing all they can to ensure the match is on. For updates check the Hyde and/or Ebbsfleet website and forum or check the clubs’ Twitter feeds: @EUFCOfficial and @hydefclive.
KEY PLAYERS
Phil Jevons (pictured to the right) has been in phenomenal form this season. The former Grimsby man, who will be remembered for his winning striker in the League Cup to dump Liverpool out, has found the net on 14 occasions this season and is very much in the fight for top scorer in the Blue Square Premier this season. Another player Hyde look to is Chris Sedgwick; the midfielder is the cog of the team, most of the play goes through him. Having featured regularly for Rotherham United, Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday since 1997 he found himself struggling to get into Scunthorpe’s side this season. After making three appearances he was sent out on loan to Hyde and that deal has recently been made permanent.

The Fleet will look to Nathan Elder to win them this game. The striker has hit 12 goals this season and having not played for a couple of weeks he’ll be eager to get back in the firing line. Preston Edwards will be key for the Fleet against an in-form front line of Phil Jevons and Scott Spencer, not to mention the attacking prowess of Hyde’s midfield, who will be looking to test the Fleet defence as much as possible.
TEAM NEWS
The only noted absence for the Tigers is Tunji Moses. The tough tackling midfielder is missing with a gashed leg. Raymond Puterill has recently been signing from Rochdale after making 20 Football League appearances in the first half of the season and Chris Sedgwick, as mentioned, has made his move permanent and will look to continue his good form.

Long-term injury victims Moses Ashikodi and Ram Marwa remain on the sidelines for the Fleet, and Ashley Carew looks to finally begin his three-match suspension. Other than this, Liam Daish has no fresh worries with his squad.

Ebbsfleet United 1-1 Lincoln City

PREVIOUS LEAGUE MEETINGS:

Due to this being Hyde’s first season at the top of Non-League, there has only been one meeting between the two sides.

10.11.12 – Ebbsfleet United 3-2 Hyde.

LAST TIME OUT:

Ebbsfleet United 3-2 Hyde.
The first league meeting between the two sides was an exciting affair. Hyde came out of the blocks firing as they took a two-goal lead inside 11 minutes. Ryan Crowther (4) and Matthew Blinkhorn (11) put the Tigers two goals up and it looked all doom and gloom for the Fleet until the 35th minute when Neil Barrett rose first and headed the hosts a vital goal. Behind at half-time the Fleet had it all to do and finally levelled up in the 72nd minute as Nathan Elder calmly put the ball in the net before substitute Matt Godden slotted the ball home seven minutes later to not only cap off a great 20-minute cameo on his debut, but give the Fleet three massive points.
Attendance: 779.

HOW THE BOOKIES SEE IT:

William Hill have Hyde favourites at 4/5 with decent odds for a ‘Fleet win at 3/1. A draw comes in at 12/5.
Bet Victor again have Hyde favourites, this time at 17/20 with the ‘Fleet at 31/10. 5/2 are the odds for a draw.
Coral have Hyde favourites at 10/11 with the ‘Fleet at 5/2. A draw for this match sees odds of 11/5. If you fancy the ‘Fleet to win 3-2 like earlier in the season then the odds are 33/1.

Under the spotlight with... Preston Edwards.

This week I was thinking of a blog to do outside of match previews and round ups and I thought it'd be good to get some questions in for Ebbsfleet 'keeper Preston Edwards to answer about his career so far to gather up his thoughts on a few things. Of course he was happy to contribute. The 23 year old is in his third season with the 'Fleet and is looking to help the club out of the predicament they find themselves in. Of course, many thanks to Preston for contributing, here's what he had to say.

You were a junior runner. Why did you give this up, and how did you get into football?

I was a 400m runner and I was at one stage the second fastest person at 17. I had to be realistic. There is not much money in athletics, unless you are right at the top and I was fast enough to compete against the big boys. Football is ten times better anyway!

What was your first footballing memory?

My first footballing memory is when I went to my local team Enfield Spartans and I was told I was going in goal because I couldn't run. I was asthmatic and I was tubby back then. They probably made the right choice!

You first taste of success came whilst on loan at Dover Athletic - Promotion to the Conference South - tell me about that. (pictured to the side)

I really enjoyed it Dover. It was great being involved near the top end of the table and playing every week. I was only on the bench at millwall and it put some new confidence in me to play men's football!

You were released by Millwall and with that came possibly your worst spell in Football - Grays Athletic under Julian Dicks. What went wrong?

Millwall only offered me a one year deal and I wasn't going to play. So I thought the best thing to do was to play games and leave. Only team who offered me first team football at a good level was Grays. It was my worst form of my career and I was in and out of the team, but I don't look at it as a regret. Look at it as a learning curve and to learn from your mistakes, to come back stronger!

You signed for Ebbsfleet in pre-season of the 2010/11 season. What attracted you to the club?

Ebbsfleet always attracted me because it was run properly and always try and be professional at all times.

You were a key part in the 'Fleet's promotion season - what were your highlights of that season?

The highlights of the promotion season was winning 3-2 away at Chelmsford. We was 2nil down! And watching the boys maul Chelmsford again in the play off semi finals. I was so nervous watching it. I know how u fans feel now!

Saturday 5th February, 2011. That red card (pictured to the side). When you look back on it do you see it as a bad moment in your career or is it something you're able to have a bit of a laugh about?

I just laugh about it. Every programme mentions that I'm the fastest red card. I just have a lil giggle now. Haha

Daren Hawkes keeps out the Farnborough attack.

Play-Off final. After an excellent season, did you fear for you place in the squad at all after young Daren Hawkes performed so well over two legs against Chelmsford?

Daren played great over the two games and I was fortunate enough to get my place back. He played a big part in our success and I got to thank him for that. I did play all the season that year. So I would have been gutted if I didn't play!

You're currently playing under Liam Daish. What sort of a manager is he, and how much has he helped you over the past three seasons?

Liam Daish has been massive to my career. He has given me the opportunity to play week in, week out and enjoy my football. Ron Hilliyard [Goalkeeping Coach] has been massive for me also. He has seen Where my strengths and weaknesses are he works me very hard in training. I feel I have improved from these two during my time at the Fleet.

You've come on in leaps and bounds and will no doubt be playing in the Football-League soon. Will EUFC always hold a place in your heart?

Ebbsfleet will always hold a place in my heart. It's been the most successful part of my career and I will never forget that.

Who is the toughest striker you've come up against in your career?

The toughest striker I have come against in my time at Ebbsfleet is Paul Pogba. Ex Wrexham. I thought when he played against when we lost 5nil, he dominated us.

Michael West recently made the step up into the Football-League. Out of the current crop of players at the club, who do you feel is capable of playing at a higher level?

Many players can make the step up. If they believe in their ability and work harder.

What is the best game you've played in? Why was it so good?

The best game I've played in was AFC Wimbledon at home, when we lost in the last min of extra time. It had everything in the game and I made probaly my best save ever.

--- If I was to hazard a guess at the save, it would be the one in extra time to deny former 'Fleet striker Luke Moore. ---

1:50 onwards in the video.
Who do you deem to be the biggest influence in your life?
Biggest influence in my life is my dad. He gives me guidance and the truth of when things are going right and wrong. Always there for me!

Andre Gray scores for Luton

If there was any player from another BSBP club that you'd like to see at the 'Fleet, who would it be, and why?

I would like to see Andre Gray from Luton. I play with him at England C and he is so strong and quick. Not surprised that league clubs are looking at him.

Recently the 'Fleet have dropped to bottom in the table. How confident are you we can survive this season?

I've worked out that we need 26 points from 20 games. I am confident we can get out. We just need to turn performances into results. Cause the games start running out.
If you wasn't playing football - what would you be doing?

I do sports coaching in schools. So I would be doing that If I wasn't playin football.

Finally, sum your career so far up in one word.

HISTORIC...

Once again, a big thanks to Preston Edwards for taking the time to answer the questions. I hope you all enjoy it.

Ebbsfleet United v Tamworth; Match Preview

Two Blue Square Bet Premier strugglers go head to head at Stonebridge Road on Saturday afternoon as Ebbsfleet and Tamworth face off, with the 'Fleet looking to end a winless run of eight games. The last time they grabbed a win was way back on November 17th as they beat Macclesfield Town away from home. Tamworth recently picked up wins against Nuneaton and Dartford but have struggled to pick up results since their good start to the season.

Ebbsfleet travelled to Woking in their last match with every chance of walking away with three valuable points. Neither side really created clear cut chances and the game was decided in the 89th minute as Bradley Bubb crossed in from the right and substitue Jayden Stockley managed to put the ball in the net with his back, not that he knew much about it! Liam Daish will no doubt be disappointed that the 'Fleet couldn't pick up a point at least. Woking manager Garry Hill will be delighted with the result on a pitch that prevented them playing slick passing football that they may be used to.

Tamworth have had a two week (League) break after their match on Tuesday at home to Southport was postponed due to the bad weather that has hit. The Lambs will be lookng to get over the result in their last league match as they lost 1-4 at home to Braintree Town. Tamworth, despite having 68% possession, were never really at the races having just one shot on target all game. Tamworth travelled to Gainsborough Trinity in the FA Trophy third round on Saturday only to suffer a 2-1 loss at the hands of their lesser opponents.

Ebbsfleet still sit second bottom in the table, and four points from safety so a win here is absolutely vital for the Kent outfit. The Lambs have dropped to 19th in the table and having played more games than the sides around them are in serious danger of dropping into the bottom four in the coming weeks.

The Lambs have recently sacked manager Marcus Law due to their recent form so will be looking to get someone in to help steer them to safety sooner rather than later. Dave Belford has been put in caretaker charge for the time being. Scott Lindsey has been appointed as Belford's assistant.

TEAM NEWS:

Moses Ashikodi and Ram Marwa are still out with knee injuries and the only fresh worry for the 'Fleet is Ashley Carew (pictured below) stupidly getting himself sent off after the match with Woking after an altercation with Woking's Kevin Betsy. Central defender Jack Saville who signed just before the Woking game will look to continue building a good partnership with Paul Lorraine.

Tamworth's captain Richard Tait is out injured while Lee Hendrie is a doubt. Top scorer Adam Cunnington (pictured below) has been playing through the pain barrier as he has a hernia. New signing Danny Lloyd, signed from Colwyn Bay, is in contention to make his debut.

KEY PLAYERS:

The 'Fleet look to striker Nathan Elder to fire them to victory in this match. The former Hereford man has failed to hit the net in his previous two matches and will look to get back amongst the goals, not only to boost his own confidence but to boost the 'Fleet as they look to put together a few wins. Tom Phipp went through a rough patch after an excellent start to the season. The midfielder seems to have re-discovered a bit of form lately and the 'Fleet will be hoping he continues this.

Tamworth will be hoping Adam Cunnington helps them to victory in this match. The former Dagenham striker has hit 13 Leaue goals this season as he sits third in the race for the golden boot. The Lambs will also be hoping he stays put this month as Kidderminster, Wrexham and Grimsby have all shown an interest in the striker. Tony Breeden will be key for Tamworth if they're to get something from this game. The 'keeper may have to be at his best to keep out the 'Fleet attack as they look to get goals that have previously evaded them.

LAST TIME OUT:

Tamworth 0-1 Ebbsfleet United - Saturday 27th October, 2012.

Tom Phipp scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time as the 'Fleet won their first League match since 8th September. Phil Walsh wasted a glorious chance for the 'Fleet early on as he rose up and headed onto the bar from less than 12 yards out. Phipp struck late on in the half as he was sent through and lobbed the keeper from just outside the box. There wasn't much in the second half in the way of chances, although Adam Cunnington did waste a good chance to equalise late on.

Attendance: 838.

HOW THE BOOKIES SEE IT:

William Hill have the 'Fleet slight favourites at 5/4 with Tamworth at 15/8. A draw in this match sees odds of 23/10.

Ladbrokes again have the 'Fleet have 5/4 with Tamworth at 17/10 and a draw coming in at 9/4. A 1-0 victory for the 'Fleet like in the match earlier in the season sees odds of 15/2.

Coral have the 'Fleet slight favourites at 13/10 with Tamworth at 15/8. A draw sees odds of 23/10. If you fancy a repeat of this fixture last season (3-0 - home win) the odds for that are 22/1.

Blue Square Bet Premier weekly round-up

In this post I shall be reviewing the Blue Square Premier matches that have taken place over the last week. With just five matches taking place on Tuesday 8th January there were plenty of goals to talk about!

Barrow travelled to Luton with just 13 players in their squad. A superb hattrick from Jon Shaw gave Luton the win they needed. Barrow's task of keeping the hosts at bay became even tougher as winger Scott Neilson put Luton ahead after just two minutes. Two more first half goals followed from Janos Kovacs (27) and Jon Shaw (29) as Luton ran away with the game. The home side came out after half-time and continuted to dominate as two more Jon Shaw goals (59, 64) gave them a 5-0 lead. At least the travelling fans had something to cheer in the 68th minute as striker Adam Boyes game them a goal, only for future star Andre Gray to go up and grab Luton's 6th just 4 minutes later! Promotion chasing Wrexham travelled to unpredictable Alfreton in search of a win that would keep their hunt for promotion going strong. Defender Neil Ashton gave the away side the lead in the 17th minute before Alfreton's Ben Tomlinson equalised in the 33rd minute of the game. Wrexham were dealt a blow just after half-time when striker Danny Wright was sent off after receiving his second yellow. Alfreton created more chances than Wrexham but an excellent solo goal from Joe Clarke in the 75th minute gave the away side all three points. Macclesfield fresh from their FA Cup exploits travelled down south to face Braintree in a match that was seen as a potential banana skin for the play-off hopefuls. Despite the home side having a huge 19 shots, their lack of cutting edge in front of goal meant only 5 of these shots were on target. Macclesfield were more clinical in front of goal with 7 of their 11 shots going on target. A neat finish by Amari Morgan-Smith (32) followed by a brace from Waide Fairhurst (67, 80) ensured the visitors returned home with 3 important points. The match between Hereford and AFC Telford saw two goals - one at the very start and one at the death. Hereford took the lead in the 2nd minute of the game when Marley Watkins converted Stefan Stam's cross. Hereford put pressure on their opponents for much of the game but could not find that elusive second goal as the away 'keeper Ryan Young was in fine form and Telford capitalised on his good work in the last minute of the game when Gerard Kinsella headed in Steven Leslie's cross, with only their first shot on target. The final game of this Tuesday evening saw Lincoln travel to Southport in a high scoring game. Southport took control of the game as defender Simon Grand bagged a brace (18, 25) to put the hosts two in front before Andy Owens made it 3-0 on 32 minutes. Lincoln didn't give up and a neat finish from top scorer Jamie Taylor before half-time gave them the slightest bit of hope. If you expected the second half to be like the first then you were very much mistaken as the fans had to wait until the 77th minute until the next goal as Karl Ledsham fired home a fourth for the hosts to put the game beyond all doubt. Lincoln's Vadaine Oliver scored a consolation in the 80th minute, but that's all it was.

Results:

Luton Town 6-1 Barrow AFC
Hereford United 1-1 AFC Telford United
Alfreton Town 1-2 Wrexham
Southport 4-2 Lincoln City
Braintree Town 0-3 Macclesfield Town

Saturday's round of matches, again, was not a full schedule of games due to some teams participating in the FA Trophy third round.

Lincoln were once again on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline as promotion hopefuls Newport County continued their play-off charge moving up to second in the table. Two goals from top scorer Aaron O'Connor and debutant Robbie Willmott ensured they travelled back to South Wales with three points in the bag. Vadaine Oliver was again on the scoresheet for Lincoln and new signing Chris Bush managed to grab a goal but it wasn't enough for the Imps as they start to fall down the table again after an impressive run of form. The standout clash of the weekend saw Mansfield, fresh off of a very respectable performance against Premier League Liverpool, take on in-form Kidderminster. Questions were asked whether the away side could get a result after selling bright prospect Jamille Matt to Fleetwood. These questions were answered brilliantly as two quickfire goals from Mickey Demetriou and Lee Vaughen gave them three valuable points as they look to continue their play-off push. AFC Telford extended their winless run to 13 games as they lost 3-2 down at Braintree. The Bucks were hoping to improve on their midweek draw with Hereford but they could not do so, despite an impressive brace from Nathan Rooney. Sean Marks, Luke Daley and a Kenny Davis penalty gave the hosts an important win. There was goals galore at Edgar Street as Hereford and Alfreton battled to a 3-3 draw. Ryan Bowman twice gave the hosts the lead but a great fightback from Alfreton at 3-1 down earned them a well deserved point. Delroy Gordon hit a late equaliser at Liberty Way as Nuneaton held promotion hopefuls Forest Green to draw. Nuneaton had missed a first half penalty before Matt Taylor put the away side in front in the 57th minute. Gordon delighted the home fans with a goal from inside the box in the 82nd minute. Sunday's game saw struggling Ebbsfleet travel to Woking with a very good chance of picking up three vitally important points. The hosts were given a chance to take the lead early on as Ebbsfleet captain Paul Lorraine fouled Loick Pires in the area. Kevin Betsy stepped up confidently before putting the ball wide of the goal. From here on there wasn't many clear cut chances and it wasn't until the 89th minute when we saw the first goal. A cross by Bradley Bubb found substitute Jayden Stockley in the area has he prodded the ball in with his back!

Results:

Lincoln City 2-4 Newport County
Mansfield Town 0-2 Kidderminster Harriers
Braintree Town 3-2 AFC Telford United
Hereford United 3-3 Alfreton Town
Nuneaton Town 1-1 Forest Green Rovers

Woking 1-0 Ebbsfleet United
